How to use this guidance

  1. 01

    Choose your original

Select an image and keep a copy. Animated GIF input produces a still image.

  2. 02

    Set a maximum and dimensions

Enter the destination’s requirements. Custom dimensions remain fixed even when a very small cap cannot be reached.

  3. 03

    Inspect the output

Check actual bytes, pixels and readability. A preset does not guarantee third-party acceptance.

Start here when your destination specifies a maximum around 100 KB. Read any minimum size and dimension rules first. A file under the maximum can still fail because its width is too small or its format is not accepted. Use the original photograph and select JPG when the form specifically requests JPEG.

For an illustrative 400 × 500 pixel requirement, enter both values as custom dimensions and inspect the framing. These numbers are an example, not a specification for a named application. The tool keeps custom dimensions fixed; if compression cannot reach the cap, it shows an above-limit warning instead of silently shrinking the frame.

The tool calculates 100 KB as 102,400 bytes. If your portal instead specifies 100,000 bytes, leave some margin below the tool's setting and verify the downloaded file. Do not rely on a rounded size display at the boundary. A clear result below the maximum does not need extra data added merely to reach the target number.

Check facial detail or readable text in the saved copy. If quality is poor, crop only irrelevant borders where allowed and try the original again. Recompressing an already damaged image cannot recover lost detail. Keep the source for future destinations with different requirements.

Common questions

Does a target guarantee an exact file size?

No. The target is a requested maximum. Inspect the actual bytes, dimensions and visual quality; a very small target can remain unmet.

Will compression keep every detail?

JPEG and WebP can lose detail. PNG uses lossless encoding, but resizing changes pixels. Keep your original and compare the preview.

Does this tool set print DPI metadata?

DPI converts centimeters or inches to pixels. This browser export does not write your chosen print-DPI tag. Check pixel dimensions and use print software for physical print settings.
